Power

August 21, 2006

Living in the earth-deposits of our history
Today a backhoe divulged out of a crumbling flank of earth
one bottle amber perfect a hundred-year-old
cure for fever or melancholy a tonic
for living on this earth in the winters of this climate

Today I was reading about Marie Curie:
she must have known she suffered from radiation sickness
her body bombarded for years by the element
she had purified

It seems she denied to the end
the source of the cataracts on her eyes
the cracked and suppurating skin of her finger-ends
till she could no longer hold a test-tube or a pencil

She died a famous woman denying
her wounds
denying
her wounds came from the same source as her power

My work with the archetype of the warrior returned with a vengeance in the last few days. Perhaps we need a better word – a word that doesn’t conjure up images of war and sparring and killing and improper use of power. What is the word – that captures the power of the warrior archetype – yet doesn’t evoke images of war?

Is this the hero of heroine? Is that the same meaning? Not really… For it is the hero or heroine who goes on the journey – Odysseus on his Odyssey – or Persephone transforming to the Queen of Hades. Are these experiences the same as the warrior?

The warrior is about power – power of presence and communication. Standing up for myself. Standing in my truth. Taking a stand.

The hero is about questing, seeking, restlessness, evolution and change.

As I write these thoughts – I know they are not the same essence – so what is the better word – that captures the spirit of warrior without the baggage?

Something to ask the Dream maker…
